How to Avoid Spike Traps on the Road
Criminals are using increasingly dangerous tactics, including placing spikes or objects on highways to force vehicles to stop, leaving drivers vulnerable to robbery. It’s essential to be aware of these incidents and take precautionary measures to protect yourself.
How to Avoid Spike Traps on the Road:
1. Avoid driving over anything on the road, including plastic bags, as spikes may be hidden under plastic, cardboard, or fabric. Criminals have even used life-size ‘puppets’ to imitate accidents.
2. If you drive over spikes, don’t stop. Reduce speed and keep driving to a safe area, even if it means damaging your wheel rims—they can be replaced.
3. Slow down to increase your awareness and chances of spotting obstacles on the road.
4. Concrete lintels are also used as traps. If unavoidable, slow down and carefully drive over them, then keep driving towards a safe area
5. Drive straddling two lanes if possible, as this may help you avoid spikes placed in the middle of a lane.
6. Maintain a safe distance of six seconds or more behind other vehicles, allowing their movements to alert you to potential hazards ahead.
